Athens Drive Jag Club Meeting 10/5/2015
Meeting opened at 7:15.
Coach Shane Barry—Athens swim team coach: Sport season begins in November; practice at TAC and have most meets there, too; about 50 swimmers last year; 65 students showed up at the interest meeting earlier this year; would love to have Athens’ fans in the stands at the meets; team captains Charlotte Nixon, Emma Edwardson, and Austin Purvis spoke about different aspects of swim team; boys’ swim team has tremendous potential this year and might end up being 2nd in the state
Coach Dave Schneider—Athens golf coach: girls’ golf team is 7 and 0 right now; based on this stellar record, the girls have already won conference; 3 or 4 girls will go to regionals; top 3 teams out of regionals play in state tournament; guys’ team—great returning group of players, couple new good players, too
Budget update: Leanne and Stephanie worked on the budget from last year; with respect to this year’s budget, we need to define $17,000 in fundraising opportunities; budget seems pretty “doable” if we come up with other fundraising income (i.e., $17,000); track budget year-to-date in Quicken (budget to actual); motion to approve the budget by Jamie Summers; second—Patrick Bunch; budget approved
Stadium update: Karin was not present, so no official update; no work lately because of the rain; engraved bricks done
Celebrate my Drive: Schools need to submit a picture or a video to enroll in this event
Old Business:
- Facilities—still working on a softball solution; to lay concrete and put a prefab building on it, we would need approval from the city of Raleigh and get a building permit; if we decide to pursue this option, the prefab building will be 16’ by 24’; someone asked if we could get the bat cave up to code, but that would take a lot of effort/expense
- New Gym pads—getting quotes now
- Having a Moes Night on Thursday, 10/8; trying to set up a faculty/staff lunch on a Teacher Workday (taco bar or something)
New Business:
- Need to get a mini mobile unit for the gator (think someone was trying to steal the gator); mobile mini is $95/month, and we will need to rent it for 4-6 months until the new storage area is complete; our theft deductible is $25,000 now (used to be $2,000), so it’s imperative that we protect our assets
- Two remaining home football games on October 9 and November 6; Jag Club will try to have tailgate parties before the games; Moes has offered to come out this Friday (Oct 9)
- Rushkin’s daughter was diagnosed with leukemia; teachers have been taking food to him; plan to get a giftcard to a grocery store to help him and his family; donations welcome
Athletic Director:
- Thinking about buying a money machine, which we would fill up with coupons (from sponsors, etc.); sell tickets to students, who would try to win prizes/coupons; machine costs about $2000
- Still looking for JV softball coach, JV lacrosse coach, JV soccer coach (Dr. Hedrick is responsible for hiring)
- $3000 pledged by baseball coach for a new lawn mower
- Banners in the gym have been ordered
- Cheerleading competition is January 29-30 and will be for high school and middle school (we will split the gate among Broughton, Enloe and Athens Drive)
- In the process of getting a minibus ($4-$7K)
- Discussed his open door policy and encouraged parents to come talk to him when there is an issue; also discussed inappropriate behavior among some of the sports players (fighting, etc.) and the need to keep players out of the game if this happens, as their behavior reflects badly on the school
Jill mentioned that there is a need for a person to make deposits (get the money from Mr. Thompson) at the bank and then give the receipts to Stephanie
December—instead of a Jag Club meeting on December 7, we will have a Christmas party in the cafeteria; will need to promote it and will open up the party to teams; will serve dessert and coffee; might have a raffle; good venue to thank our sponsors, talk about Jag Club and what it accomplishes, etc.
